Monterey Bay Aquarium's New iPhone App Connects Seafood Lovers to Best Choices

01/09/2009
The Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program has been connecting seafood lovers to ocean-friendly choices for almost a decade. Individuals wanting to find the best choices for healthy oceans have always been able to download and print Seafood Watch pocket guides from www.seafoodwatch.org.

Now the acclaimed aquarium has launched a new application for Apple’s iPhone or iPod touch, bringing up-to-date seafood recommendations to your fingertips. iPhone users can download the free application from the App Store for even easier access to sustainable seafood information when buying from a favorite restaurant or fishmonger.

To find out more and download the app, visit www.montereybayaquarium.org/iphoneapp. Or browse the App Store on your iPhone or iPod touch and download the free, official app from the Monterey Bay Aquarium directly to your device.

Simply choose your region of the United States – or the national sushi guide – and make your selection from the ocean-friendly recommendations on the Seafood Watch lists. At a time when the world’s oceans are severely overfished, your seafood selections really do make a difference.

Don’t have an iPhone? Seafood Watch recommendations are available for any mobile device with an Internet connection. Go to mobile.seafoodwatch.org and you'll be automatically directed to mobile-friendly online guides, including the latest sushi recommendations.

The non-profit Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program is the most recognized and trusted source for sustainable seafood recommendations; in 2008, the program earned the Tastemaker of the Year award from Bon Appétit magazine.

Recommendations for over 135 of the most popular seafood items are available at www.seafoodwatch.org and can also be found on the aquarium’s convenient pocket guides. Since its debut in 1999, the Seafood Watch program has distributed more than 27 million pocket guides, with six regional guides and three Spanish-language options. All feature seafood popular in different regions of the United States. A national sushi guide was launched in October 2008. Printed pocket guides are updated every six months, ranking seafood as “Best Choices”, “Good Alternatives” or “Avoid”.

The mission of the Monterey Bay Aquarium is to inspire conservation of the oceans.
