Los Altos Attorney Stephen C. Neal Elected Chair of Monterey Bay Aquarium Board of Trustees
Distinguished California attorney Stephen C. Neal has been elected as chairman of the board of trustees of the nonprofit Monterey Bay Aquarium.
The aquarium’s 17-member board unanimously selected Neal to succeed Dr. Peter Bing, who had served as board chair since the death of David Packard in 1996. Dr. Bing continues to serve as board chairman emeritus.
Neal has served on the aquarium board since 1998, and has been vice chairman since May 2011. He has headed the board’s development committee since September 2004.
“Steve has been an invaluable member of our board,” said aquarium Executive Director Julie Packard. “We will benefit enormously from his leadership in this new capacity.”
A Los Altos resident, Neal chairs the Cooley LLP law firm, which represents leading business clients in the U.S. and abroad. He also chairs the firm’s management committee. In March Neal was named one of the 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America by the National Law Journal. Neal began his law career in Chicago, after he graduated from Harvard University and earned his law degree at Stanford University.
Neal’s community activities have included involvement with the University of Chicago Law School, Harvard College, Stanford Law School and the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. He is also a board member of the Hewlett Foundation and is chairman of the board of Levi Strauss & Co.
The mission of the Monterey Bay Aquarium is to inspire conservation of the oceans.
