"Aquarium Adventures" Programs Connect Visitors With the Wonders of Monterey Bay
Behind-the scenes tours, sleepovers, kids’ scuba offer in-depth experiences
At the Monterey Bay Aquarium special summer adventures offer deeper ways to explore the aquarium and the marine life of Monterey Bay. Whether it’s a behind-the-scenes tour with aquarium naturalists, a scuba program for kids or sleeping next to a favorite exhibit with friends and family, there’s an ocean of options this summer – and throughout the year.
An expanded lineup of Aquarium Adventures is offered all summer long, with many programs available year-round. There’s a full schedule with details and online ticketing at www.montereybayaquarium.org/adventures.
The popular Underwater Explorers program for kids ages 8 through 13 resumes June 17 and continues through September 2. Underwater Explorers is a surface SCUBA experience: a unique and life-changing opportunity to explore the aquarium’s Great Tide Pool and come face-to-face with the animals that call it home. Kids are guided by trained aquarium dive staff as they get a fish-eye view of the wonders of Monterey Bay. No experience or equipment is necessary, only a sense of adventure.
Summer Nights Sleepovers offer special opportunities to see exhibit animals and galleries in a different light on four Saturdays throughout July and August. Each sleepover includes evening activities and a late-night snack before participants bed down beside a favorite exhibit. Continental breakfast is included as part of this exclusive opportunity. It’s also possible to schedule youth group sleepovers throughout the year. The aquarium Sales & Reservation Center has all the details, at 866-963-9645.
Behind-the-scenes tours are offered several times each day, with different themes to give visitors ages 6 and up an insider’s view of the nation’s No. 1 aquarium. The Feed the Fish tour is a 30-minute sneak peek behind the scenes, with an opportunity to feed the fishes in the Kelp Forest exhibit. Other options include the new Jellies tour, Behind-the-Scenes tour, Family tour and the two-hour Feeding Frenzy tour (ages 8 to adult), where participants enter before the aquarium opens and take part in "morning rounds" to learn what’s involved in getting the aquarium’s living exhibits ready for the day.
Costs vary per program, with a discount for aquarium members.
Visit www.montereybayaquarium.org/adventures for program details, schedules and tickets. Advance registration is recommended; register by calling 866-963-9645 or stop by the Membership and Tours Desk in the main lobby during your visit.
Summer aquarium admission is $34.95 adult; $31.95 senior (65+) and student (full-time college, with I.D.); and $21.95 children 3-12 and the disabled from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Children under 3 are admitted free of charge. Discounted tickets for members of the military and their families can be purchased in advance at many California and Nevada installations.
The aquarium is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in summer months, with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays from June 29 through September 1.
The mission of the Monterey Bay Aquarium is to inspire conservation of the oceans.
