Julie Packard Named One of "Cooking Light's" 25th Anniversary 'Food Heroes' for Aquarium's Seafood Watch Program
Cooking Light magazine has named Monterey Bay Aquarium Executive Director Julie Packard one of its 25th anniversary “Food Heroes” for her leadership in the sustainable seafood movement through the aquarium’s respected Seafood Watch program.
Packard was one of 20 individuals recognized by the magazine for their role in improving the food scene in the United States.
The aquarium’s science-based Seafood Watch program is the most respected sustainable seafood awareness program in the United States, with a database of more than 2,400 seafood recommendations.
Since its inception in 1999, Seafood Watch has distributed more than 40 million consumer pocket guides, and its smartphone apps have been downloaded more than a million times. It works with consumers, chefs, major seafood buyers and nearly 200 partners nationwide to empower individuals and businesses to make choices for healthy oceans. In doing so, the aquarium works to transform seafood markets in ways that create incentives for sustainable fishing and aquaculture practices.
Other Cooking Light honorees include: author and food activist Michael Pollan; New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; Chipotle founder Steve Ells; chefs Jamie Oliver, Dan Barber and Grant Achatz; Harvard University public health researchers Walter Willett and David Eisenberg; 12-year-old Marshall Reid, author of Portion Size Me; Michael Minor, a Baptist pastor and crusader against obesity; PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi; Glenn Roberts of heirloom grain producer Anson Mills; Gary Cohen of Health Care Without Harm, who works to get hospitals to serve healthier food; Jim Gossen, who promotes sustainable Gulf Coast seafood; urban farming activist Will Allen of Growing Power; Fedele Bauccio of eco-friendly food service company Bon Appétit Management Co.; Chris Collins and Lydia Tenaglia, producers of breakthrough food television programs; organic farming leader Dave Murphy of Food Democracy Now!; and J. Kenji López-Alt, a Food Lab columnist and co-creator of SeriousEats.com.
All of the honorees are profiled in Cooking Light’s November 2012 25th anniversary issue.
