Make Way for the LadiesFebruary 2006
A new trio of female blackfooted penguins from the Maryland Zoo joined the others in our Splash Zone Exhibit: 13-year-old Susu, Swahili for "licorice;" four-year-old Umngane, Zulu for "friend;" and three-year-old Zuri, Swahili for "beautiful."
We make arrangements with the Maryland Zoo to acquire these captive-born penguins just days before Hurricane Katrina devastates the Gulf Coast in August 2005 and we help rescue 19 penguins from the Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans. We are specifically looking for adult females to join our permanent colony because the current ratio of females to males in our exhibit (four females, 11 males) is contributing to excessive competition and aggression among the birds. |
