Central Coast Marine Protection Approved
April 2007Thanks to the tireless work of the Ocean Action Team and the Monterey Bay Aquarium's conservation allies, the California Fish and Game Commission gives final approval for a strong network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) along the Central Coast of California. The 29 MPAs cover over 200 miles.
Areas such as Soquel Canyon, Point Sur, and Piedras Blancas are now safe havens for fish and other marine life to thrive. MPAs are sections of the ocean set aside for protection, conserving biological diversity, providing a sanctuary for sea life, recreation, education and to help rebuild depleted fisheries.
