Fourth Freshwater Otter Pup Born

January 2008
A fourth African spotted-necked otter is born at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, named "Ziwa" (ZEE-WAH), which means "lake" or "pond" in Swahili. She is the second pup born to mother Neema (NEE-MAH) and father Denny (DEN-EE), and the family can be seen together in their Wild About Otters exhibit.

The freshwater otters are part of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums' Species Survival Plan program, a cooperative effort among AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums to ensure the survival of threatened and endangered wildlife species through breeding programs, research, public education, reintroduction and field projects.
