Julie Packard Honored by American Academy of Arts and Sciences and California Coastal Commission
APRIL and AUGUST 2009In April, the American Academy of Arts & Sciences elects Monterey Bay Aquarium Executive Director Julie Packard to its 2009 class of Fellows and Foreign Honorary Members, one of the nation's most prestigious honorary societies and a center for independent policy research. Fellows include more than 250 Nobel laureates and more than 60 Pulitzer Prize winners.
Then, in August, Julie is named one of nine California Coastal Heroes by Sunset magazine and the California Coastal Commission. She and her fellow honorees are profiled in the September issue of Sunset and honored at the California Coastal Commission's 25th anniversary celebration in San Francisco, where she is recognized for her leadership of an institution that "has been the standard by which all other aquariums are measured," according to Katie Tamony, Sunset's editor-in-chief.
During the year Julie also launches a monthly ocean conservation column in HuffingtonPost.com, on topics from sustainable seafood to climate change.
