Founding of MBARI

Summer 1987
The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is founded. Dedicated to deep-sea research, MBARI scientists and engineers will develop new technology and research programs to plumb the depths of the Monterey submarine canyon and its deep-water world, while Aquarium researchers will focus on the nearshore marine environments and other areas with direct application to Aquarium exhibits.
