Fifth Anniversary Party

October 20, 1989
Free admission for Monterey Peninsula residents, lectures and tours, a street dance and a circus make up a nine-day celebration of the Aquarium's fifth birthday. Over nine million people visited the Aquarium in its first five years of operation.

All Shook Up

Fifth anniversary festivities are tempered by the Loma Prieta earthquake, which occurs only a few days before the celebration. The Aquarium withstands the 7.1 temblor without damage, although a diver who was in the Kelp Forest exhibit at the time of the quake says it sounded like a helicopter hovering overhead.
