National Geographic Feature

February 1990
The Aquarium is highlighted in a National Geographic magazine article on Monterey Bay entitled "Between Monterey Tides." With the magazine's spectacular photography and luminous writing, the article conveys the Aquarium's success in bringing the wonders of the "exuberant kingdom" to the public. The article describes Monterey Bay as a "cool, deep Pacific realm cut into the central California coast [where] a remarkable variety of marine creatures and environments converge."

The Aquarium shoot involved 40 cases of lighting equipment (including every piece National Geographic had in Washington), boats and a helicopter. It was the most complex shoot photographer Jonathan Blair had done to date.
