Explore Our History

The Outer Bay Waters exhibit in the new wing will be large enough to house great schools of fish that are used to life in the boundless waters of the open sea.

Reaching Out

June 1990
After completing a feasibility study for the addition of a new exhibit wing focusing on Monterey Bay's open ocean and deep-sea habitats, the Aquarium formally applies for building permits. Scheduled to open in 1996, the wing will nearly double the Aquarium's exhibit space, allowing us to interpret more extensively the bay's distant habitats and to provide areas for expanded special exhibitions.

A jellies gallery will feature the most extensive collection of these delicate ocean drifters to be found at any Aquarium.

In the new Plankton Lab, visitors will gain a new appreciation for the importance of phytoplankton and zooplankton. These tiny drifters may be microscopic in size—but their role in preserving the balance of life on our planet may be immense.
