Because kreisel tanks are circular, open ocean jellies don't get caught in corners. The design also keeps jellies in the center of the exhibit window-the best place for visitors to see them.

Planet of the Jellies

March 1992
The oceans' most delicate animals, like these golden-brown sea nettles, star in this special exhibit.

The largest exhibition of living jellies ever presented, Planet of the Jellies creates the experience of traveling to a strange planet. The exhibit includes 17 species, some never before exhibited. This array of some of the most delicate and beautiful creatures on Earth is a forerunner of the Outer Bay's Drifters gallery.

Modified Tank Top for Jellies

Developing a tank design to meet a jelly's needs was a problem when the Aquarium decided to display jellies. The solution lay in modifying the design of a German marine biologist, who had developed a tank in the 1960s to hold plankton. He called it a kreisel—German for "child's spinning top"—because of its circular shape and the rotation water makes as it flows through the tank. Further altered by our aquarists, it's the basic design that houses some of our jellies today.
