Outer Bay Progress

July 1994
A dream years in the making begins to take its final form as special cranes lift the 78,000-pound acrylic viewing window of the Outer Bay exhibit into place. The window is the largest in the world and will offer a vista that transports visitors 60 miles offshore. The Outer Bay will enable us to tell the full story of Monterey Bay by accommodating exhibits of open ocean and deep-sea life.

The ribs of the concrete walls of the giant Outer Bay exhibit support a fiberglass liner. More than two million blue tiles cover the exhibit to create the feeling of looking into the open sea.
