Aloha Mola
November 1998
Our ocean sunfish (
Mola mola
) lives up to its Latin name, which means "millstone," by growing in one year from 57 pounds to 880 pounds and measuring 6-foot-6 from the tip of its dorsal fin to the tip of its anal fin. The world's heaviest bony fish, molas can grow to be over 10 feet long and weigh in excess of a ton. To allow our sunfish more spacious accommodations, it is lifted out of the Outer Bay exhibit by helicopter and returned to Monterey Bay.
