Hubb's beaked whale
NOT ON EXHIBIT
At the Aquarium
Natural History
This is one of the most mysterious of all whales; scientists know little about it. No one's ever seen one riding a boat's bow wave or leaping in the air, as many dolphins do.
Much of what we do know comes from studying dead whales washed up on beaches. Most of them have long scars and scratches on their backs, which may be from fights between males.
Conservation
What little is known of this rare whales comes from individuals stranded on the shore.
Cool Facts
Like most beaked whales, this species has only two teeth protruding outside the mouth. These teeth may be used like tusks when two males battle.
