2011-2012 School Programs Application

Please read carefully and complete all applicable fields.

All school field trip reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Home school groups are welcome to participate in our Discovery Lab or Ocean Explorers School Programs. Please note that Discovery Lab and Ocean Explorers School Programs are highly structured, can accommodate a maximum of three consecutive grade levels in a single program, and are subject to program capacity minimums and maximums. Please continue below if you meet these requirements and still wish to visit the Aquarium for a School Programs field trip.

Notification of a reservation will be e-mailed to the Lead Teacher approximately four weeks after we receive the application. Please be sure to add schoolprograms@mbayaq.org to your 'Allowed' senders list otherwise your notification may go into your spam folder. If you haven't received an e-mail notification within four weeks, please call (831) 644-7538 to verify that we received your application.

Dates Requested

  • Select 10 dates, in order of preference (1 = first choice, 2 = second choice, etc.)
  • To receive your desired program: Apply for the earliest possible dates of the school year and the earliest possible days of the week.

Check-in time is 15 minutes before the listed program time. For example, if you want to be eligible for a 9:15 a.m. Discovery Lab Classroom Program, you must indicate that the earliest time you can arrive is at 9 a.m.; if you want to be eligible for a 10 a.m. Self-Guided visit, you must indicate that the earliest time you can arrive is 9:45 a.m. We'll assign you the earliest check-in time available based on your arrival time and the availability of your program choice(s).

Note: If you'd like to participate in a 12:15 p.m. Discovery Lab Classroom Program, you must indicate a departure time of 1:15 p.m. or later.

Discovery Lab Classroom Programs 
(September 13, 2011-May 25, 2012)

60-minute classroom program with an Aquarium educator. Participants have opportunities to touch, feed and closely observe live animals.

  • Offered to grades K-12 with maximum of three consecutive grade levels per program.
  • Minimum number of students is 15. Maximum number of students per class is 32.
  • We can book two groups of 32 (total of 64 students) in a single Discovery Lab time slot.
Ocean Explorers Auditorium Program 
(Available September 13, 2011-May 25, 2012)

25 minute interactive auditorium program led by an Aquarium educator using rich video media. Sets the stage for a fun, focused Aquarium visit.

  • Offered to grades K-12 with maximum of three consecutive grade levels per program.
  • Minimum number of students is 32. Maximum number of student per class is 120.
Self-Guided Programs 
(Available year-round)

You determine the focus, set the pace and visit length. Our web site has curriculum materials and ideas for activities before, during and after your visit.

  • Offered to Preschool-Grade 12.
  • Minimum number of students is 12. Maximum number of student per class is 120

*On a case by case basis, we may be able to accommodate requests to bring more than 120 students on a field trip visit Mondays through Wednesdays from September through February. Please call Cyndi Fox at 831-644-7538 for more information.

Monterey Bay Aquarium welcomes students of all abilities. Please help our staff prepare for your visit by providing us with information about your group or specific classes (special needs, language needs, learning level, etc.).
