The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program is recognized as the leader in creating science-based recommendations that help consumers, chefs and businesses choose seafood that is caught or farmed in ways that don't harm the environment. Our recommendations indicate which seafood items are "Best Choices," "Good Alternatives," and which ones you should "Avoid."
Since 1999, we've distributed over 40 million consumer guides, our smartphone application has been downloaded nearly a million times and we have close to 200 partners across North America, including the two largest food service companies in the U.S.
The Most Important Thing You Can Do for the Oceans
Whether at a restaurant or in your grocery store, ask the question: "Do you sell sustainable seafood?" Businesses take requests from their customers seriously, so each time you ask, your voice helps shape the practices of the entire seafood industry. There are other ways to make a difference:
- Carry a Seafood Watch® consumer guide or use our app to access our recommendations.
- Choose seafood from our "Best Choices" or "Good Alternatives" lists when you dine out or shop at the grocery store.
- Join Seafood Watch on Facebook and Twitter.
- Together we can save the oceans—one meal at a time.
