Ocean Quahog Clams

Ocean quahog populations are abundant, however, they are frequently collected in a way that is damaging to the seafloor habitat.

Summary

Ocean quahog clams grow slowly and live long lives, thriving for up to 225 years. A large percentage of this abundant population is currently 100 years old or older.

Ocean quahogs are commonly caught using hydraulic clam dredges, which use pressurized water jets to wash clams out of the sediment. This fishing method results in considerable damage to seafloor habitats.
