Longfin and Shortfin

The longfin squid population is considered healthy and abundant, but the overall condition of the shortfin squid population is not known.

Consumer Note

Longfin squid is available fresh and frozen year-round. Shortfin squid is also available frozen most of the year, but is only available fresh in the summer and fall.

Summary

Longfin and shortfin squid mature quickly and reproduce prolifically — qualities that should help them maintain stable populations — and neither is being over-fished. The longfin population is considered healthy, and therefore is a "Best Choice". The overall condition of the shortfin population is not known, and that leads to its "Good Alternative" rating.

Most fishing for both longfin and shortfin squid is by trawling, which leads to some bycatch. How much is not certain, but indications are that it is moderate. Habitat effects are considered moderate, too. In some habitats, trawling can be very harmful, but it causes less damage in sand habitats, where most fishing for longfin and shortfin squid is done.
