Consumer Note

In the Southeast, Florida pompano is often available as a special menu item. Our recommendation doesn't apply to other fishes sold as pompano, including African pompano and silver and black pomfret. These species are wild-caught or farmed internationally and are outside the scope of our recommendation.

Summary

Pompano is a fast-growing fish that matures and reproduces in just a few years - traits that help it withstand fishing pressure. Florida pompano was previously overfished, but populations are now rebuilding.

Florida pompano is a valuable commercial and recreational species. It's caught off Florida's Atlantic and Gulf coasts with a variety of gear including gillnets (in federal waters), seine and cast nets, bandit gear (power rod and reel), and hook-and-line gear (standard fishing polls, troll gear, etc.). Moderately healthy populations and relatively benign fishing methods make Florida pompano a "Good Alternative."
