Sea Turtles
Sea turtle populations have been reduced by 90% and are on three major lists of threatened or endangered species, including the U.S. Endangered Species list.
Consumer Note
Despite their protected status, sea turtles are still eaten in many countries. In Latin America, they have long been considered a delicacy for special occasions.
Summary
Five species of sea turtles are found in the Gulf of California: East Pacific green turtle, hawksbill, olive ridley, loggerhead and leatherback. All five are listed in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, and the U.S. Endangered Species Act.
Under Mexican law, it's been illegal to catch sea turtles since 1990, but sea turtle poaching continues.
