Globally, about 70% of fisheries (or fish species) are at harvesting capacity, overfished or already depleted, so they cannot handle additional fishing pressures. Consequently, only 30% of the world's fish stocks are abundant enough to supply increasing global demand for seafood. In the U.S. alone, approximately 41% of our known fisheries are overfished. Amazingly, the status of 75% of fish stocks the U.S. government is required, by law, to manage is unknown.

Above, the image depicts a trawler catching literally tons of fish in one haul of their net. There are hundreds of thousands of fishing vessels just like this one across the globe every day, extracting millions of tons of fish from the ocean every year.

What are the issues?

OVERFISHING

70% of the world's fisheries are at capacity, overfished or depleted.
