In addition to farmed salmon, Seafood Watch recommends that you avoid imported, farmed shrimp. About 25% of shrimp is farm raised, mostly in ponds constructed along coasts of developing nations, resulting in destruction of over a million hectares of wetlands worldwide. Wetland habitats provide critical nursery habitats for wild, juvenile fish. Additionally, the waste from shrimp ponds is discharged into the surrounding environment, further impacting coastal ecosystems.
