Major Objectives

  • Increase awareness on campus regarding plastic usage and the effects of plastic on the environment
  • Raise money for the installation of a refillable water bottle station
  • Create and broadcast a public service announcement (PSA) regarding single-use plastics and the effects on the environment

Description

Franklin High School students surveyed other students in order to understand conservation habits in regards to single-use water bottle usage and the use of recycling containers. Students formed The Plastics Club and created a public service announcement (PSA) regarding single-use plastics and the effects on the environment. In addition to pre- and post-surveys, The Plastics Club measured the behavior change at Franklin High School by counting the amount of single-use water bottles that were thrown away in the recycling container before the PSA was shown as well as after the PSA was shown. The Plastics Club raised funds to install a reusable water bottle filling station by selling reusable water bottles and club merchandise. Over 50 percent of the student population at Franklin High School has committed to bringing their own reusable water bottles to school since implementation of the plastic usage awareness project and single-use bottle consumption was noticeably reduced.

Notes from the Field

"We brainstorm ways we can reduce our plastic use and what we can do instead. We take a field trip to the transfer station and learn more about what should go in the landfill and what shouldn't. By researching the problem, students become empowered to do their part."
