ROV launching
Just offshore from Monterey lies the Monterey Canyon—a deep sea canyon that's unusually close to shore and is home to an amazing variety of deep sea animals.

To collect animals from the canyon, we teamed up with researchers around the bay, including scientists from our sister institution, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). MBARI owns two robot submersibles (or ROVs), each equipped with video cameras, lights and mechanical arms, which are operated from ships at the surface. The manipulator arms are outfitted with a variety of tools, which we use to collect animals that live on the canyon's steep walls and deep seafloor.

One day MBARI scientists discovered hundreds of pom-pom anemones on the seafloor. But when they set out to collect them using the ROV, the anemones stuck to the collecting gear, which makes it impossible to remove them intact. Find out the $5.99 solution to that problem!
