When we started planning our deep sea exhibit, we put together a wish list of over 80 animals we hoped to display. Most of the species had never been kept on display beforelet alone studied in any detail. Our biologists began years of research on these species, looking for the perfect ones to exhibit successfully.
To make the final list, an animal had to be plentiful enough to collect and hardy enough to survive at sea level. After years of trial and error, we narrowed our list to about 60 different species.
We experimented with different water temperatures, lighting conditions and oxygen levelsthen monitored the animals' responses over months and sometimes years. In time, we pieced together each animal's precise needs.
To collect and keep these exotic species, our biologists use everything from high-tech ROVs to common kitchen gadgets.
