Striped Bass

(U.S. Atlantic, Gillnet and Pound Net)

Rating:
U.S. Atlantic striped bass caught by hook-and-line is a "Best Choice." When caught by gillnet or pound net, it's a "Good Alternative."

Market Names:
Greenhead, Linesides, Rockfish, Striper, Suzuki

Consumer Notes:
Atlantic striped bass is found along the coast from northern Florida to Canada. These recommendations apply to the U.S. fishery only.

Summary:
Striped bass is slow to mature and reproduce, making it vulnerable to fishing pressure. However, recent stock assessments show that striped bass is abundant and the current level of fishing is not a concern.

The hook-and-line fishery (about 26 percent of the catch) is highly selective and therefore low in bycatch, but gillnet and pound net fisheries are less so. There are two species of concern: the river herring - a depleted stock - and the Atlantic sturgeon, whose populations are listed as endangered or threatened.
