African Blackfooted Penguins
Our energetic and inquisitive blackfooted penguins are visitor favorites. These birds can’t fly but they’re built to swim and dive, with strong wings, streamlined bodies and waterproof feathers.
Using their wings as flippers and their feet as rudders, they zip through the water fast enough to chase down schools of cape anchovy and other small fishes.
African blackfooted penguins can swim at about 15 miles an hour. On land, though, it's slow going. Normal penguin waddling speed is only about 2 mph.
