Mapping Undersea Mountains

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is conducting deep-sea research that’s changing what we know about the ocean—and what we need to do to protect it.

Using undersea robots and other high-tech tools, MBARI is revealing life on “seamounts”—undersea mountains thousands of feet below the ocean’s surface. This mysterious world includes ancient forests of sponges and corals, inhabited by creatures unlike any you’ve seen before.
