Canneries and Our Bountiful Bay

Follow the boom and bust times of Monterey Bay's fishing industry from the 1930s to today.

On Cannery Row in the 1930s and 1940s, your senses would reel from the din of machines, the stink of fish and the slosh of cold sea water. The Hovden Cannery (current site of the Aquarium) and 20 others were running day and night, turning a silver stream of sardines into products for people.

At the height of the sardine boom, Cannery Row processed 250,000 tons of fish a year.
