Clownfish

While many fish fear anemones, the colorful clownfish finds comfort nestled among the poisonous tentacles. This is because the clownfish—sometimes called the anemonefish—is covered by a protective mucous that enable them to live together in harmony.

The arrangement is a good deal for both—the clownfish is aggressive and territorial, and drives away anemone-eating fish. Meanwhile, the anemone’s poisonous tentacles helps keep other predators at bay. Clownfish have another unique trait: they start as males, then turn into females as they get older.
