Pigs in an Aquarium?

Take a trip to the pump house to see our “pigs” and learn how we keep the pipes in our Kelp Forest exhibit clean. An open seawater system pumps up to 2,000 gallons per minute through the exhibit, bringing with it young animals like clams and mussels that settle and grow inside our pipes and eventually clog them.

To keep the pipes clean, we run “pigs”—plugs made from foam and plastic—through the pipes every few months. Hundreds of gallons of water push the pigs along at incredible pressure to clear accumulated growths.
