Vice President of Exhibitions
Since 1986, Don Hughes has been responsible for the Aquarium's onsite visitor experience. This includes the overall aesthetics of public space and the maintenance, development, design, production and evaluation of existing and new interpretative exhibits, public signage, graphics and new media.
"I'm always fascinated by how our visitors connect with live animals emotionally, and how the connection promotes a sense of humanity and morality. That, in turn, can lead to the kind of changes in behavior needed to rescue the ocean."
Before coming to the Aquarium, Don served as director of exhibitions at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Prior to joining the museum world, Don taught art and design at both the junior high school and college levels.
Don holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in design with high distinction as well as a Master of Fine Arts degree in printmaking from the California College of Arts and Crafts.
