We peli-can do it!
Decades ago, the widespread use of the pesticide DDT caused brown pelicans’ eggshells to become so thin that they often broke before chicks could hatch. As a result, their population declined drastically, and they were listed as endangered. Just two years later, the United States Environmental Protection Agency banned the use of DDT across the country, leading to a dramatic rebound for this special bird. The species has officially been delisted from its endangered status, and populations have increased by an estimated 712 percent in some areas across their range. The brown pelican’s comeback is proof the U.S. Endangered Species Act works!
