Compra primero. Los mariscos calificados en verde están bien gestionados y se capturan o cultivan de manera responsable con el medio ambiente. Representan un bajo riesgo ambiental.

Buena alternativa

Compra si no hay una opción calificada en verde disponible. Este marisco presenta un riesgo ambiental moderado.

Evitar

Pasa de largo. Los productos del mar con calificación roja representan un alto riesgo para el medio ambiente. Están sobreexplotados, carecen de una gestión adecuada o se capturan o cultivan de maneras que dañan a otras especies marinas o al entorno.

** “FADs” es la abreviatura de dispositivos agregadores de peces, que atraen atunes y otras especies a un lugar específico, facilitando su captura con redes de cerco. How to use the guides

Seafood Watch assesses how specific fisheries or farms perform against our rigorous environmental sustainability standards and then assigns ratings based on the outcomes.

We suggest buying Best Choice, Good Alternative, or recommended certified seafood where possible or choosing a plant-based alternative. 

  • Best Choice
    Buy first. Green-rated seafood is well managed and caught or farmed in an environmentally responsible manner. It poses a low environmental risk.
  • Good Alternative
    Buy if a green-rated option is not available. This seafood poses a moderate environmental risk.
  • Avoid
    Take a pass on this red-rated seafood for now because it poses a high risk to the environment.

Where to find sustainable seafood

When shopping and dining, the easiest and most important thing you can do is ask, “Do you sell sustainable seafood?” Or, you may need to ask what species it is and where and how it was caught or farmed. 

If the business cannot answer your questions or the information isn’t on the label, we encourage you to err on the side of caution and look for other green-rated seafood. 

Even though retailers and restaurants are increasingly providing location and harvest method information, you’ll undoubtedly encounter businesses that don’t know if their seafood is sustainable. When customers ask questions, it builds demand for sustainable seafood and encourages businesses to provide it as an option.

Grocery stores

We work with grocery stores to implement time-bound commitments to follow Seafood Watch recommendations. MOM’s Organic Market and PCC Community Markets follow our recommendations. Whole Foods Market follows our recommendations for wild seafood and has a proprietary standard for farmed seafood. Many other major grocery stores offer sustainable seafood options, so please read labels and ask the fish counter employees, “Do you sell sustainable seafood?”

Restaurants

We work with major restaurant chains—including California Fish Grill and The Cheesecake Factory—that are implementing their sustainable seafood commitments. Also, chefs nationwide are dedicated to selling sustainable seafood, so we recommend asking, “Do you serve sustainable seafood?” when dining out.

Meal delivery services

Blue Apron and Hello Fresh only send their customers green-rated, yellow-rated, or certified seafood. Other meal delivery services may offer sustainable seafood, and we encourage you to ask them if they don’t.
