Filming and photography FAQs

Can I film the sea otters?

The fascinating world of the aquarium's Sea Otter Program has many shifting timelines, guidelines, and protocols. For all the fin-tastic filming details, swim on over to our Filming Sea Otters page.

Can I film for commercial purposes?

Taking photos or videos for commercial purposes, including for stock images, advertising, and merchandise, is prohibited without authorization from the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Can I film documentaries, pilots, and student films?

  • Films that don't directly promote or feature the Aquarium won't be considered. This includes the use of footage strictly for b-roll purposes or "blue-chip" documentaries.
  • We are also unable to consider pilot TV programs, student films, and unsold documentaries or films.

How do I request authorization for location filming and is there a fee?

Location filming and photography requests are considered on a case-by-case basis. We may require fees in order to film or photograph, depending on the specific needs of each project.

What is the Aquarium's filming availability?

  • Monterey Bay Aquarium can't accommodate filming on weekends, holidays, pre-booked event buyouts, and during times of high attendance when filming/photography would have a negative impact on guest experience. Filming blackout dates may apply during peak attendance seasons (e.g., spring break, summer months, holidays).
  • The Aquarium requires at least two weeks' notice prior to filming.
  • Due to the volume of requests we receive, we can't individually respond to every one. You should receive a reply within a few days if we can support your request.

What if my filming request is related to MBARI, not the Aquarium itself?

For use of MBARI media and other related inquiries please visit the MBARI Media page.
