Reducing plastic pollution

Turning science and solutions into action to reduce plastic at its source.

Overview

The Monterey Bay Aquarium works to eliminate harmful plastics at their source to reduce ocean pollution. From cafes and gift shops to global research partnerships, we implement solutions that reduce plastic waste, promote sustainable materials, and inspire guests and communities to act.

Program highlights

  • 12 bills supported and passed into California law to reduce single-use plastic
  • 84 letters sent to state and federal lawmakers urging them to address plastic pollution
  • 15 Aquarium authored or co-authored scientific papers, reports, and expert publications about plastic pollution and policy solutions

Our goals and approach

Our goals

  • Deepen our understanding of where plastic pollution originates and how it affects the environment.
  • Advance policy to drive systemic change that mitigates the root causes and impacts of plastic pollution.
  • Drive improvements in corporate practices to cut waste at the source.
  • Raise public awareness and maintain pressure for sustained action.

How we work

Built on our efforts to identify the sources and impacts of plastic pollution, our strategy scales from local action to global initiatives:

  • Aquarium researchers and our partners at MBARI investigate the ocean, especially the deep sea, to identify plastic sources and study their impacts.
  • We work on influential papers that translate complex data into actionable policy frameworks.
  • We model solutions at home by eliminating single-use plastics from our cafe and retail store.
  • Our Teen Conservation Leaders mobilize community allies to advocate for solutions to plastic pollution.
  • We champion state legislation to ban harmful items like microbeads and single-use bags and help shape better laws that reduce production, redesign packaging, improve reuse systems, and strengthen producer responsibility.
  • Our experts join international scientific committees to push the U.S. to become a leader in addressing the plastic pollution crisis and create a national plastic strategy that can create jobs, support healthier communities, and help protect our ocean.
  • Our leadership advocates on the world stage for a landmark UN Global Plastics Treaty, supporting binding measures across the full life cycle of plastic.

Why it matters

Plastic pollution is a major threat to marine life, human health, and ecosystems. Yet science tells us it’s a challenge we can tackle with focused action. Public demand for governments and businesses to act has never been stronger. By turning science into action, meaningful change is possible—and essential—for a healthy ocean and a healthier future for all.

2050

Global plastic production is set to quadruple by 2050 if nothing is done

40%

of the plastic produced is packaging, the majority of it is single-use and often not recyclable

93

nations voted to negotiate a global agreement to end plastic pollution

25

policymakers honored with the Aquarium’s California Ocean Champion Award since 2010 for their efforts to protect our ocean

700

businesses have made plastic-reduction commitments in collaboration with our aquariums

30+

members of the Aquarium Conservation Partnership have joined us in committing to reduce plastic use1
