The magic of Elkhorn Slough

Elkhorn Slough is a local enchanting place with tranquil waterways winding through lush salt marshes and vibrant estuarine habitats. It offers a captivating tapestry of natural beauty, wildlife, and biodiversity along the California coast. As we explore the wondrous wildlife and splendor of this place, we need to acknowledge that it hasn't always been this way. Prior to 2002, the water quality was much worse, and there were fewer eelgrass meadows in existence.

Since the early 1980s, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Sea Otter Program has played an important role in the continued recovery of the southern sea otter population—especially in Elkhorn Slough.

"As we've released our surrogate-reared otters in the slough over the past few decades, we've seen the [overall sea otter] population grow, the ecosystem improve, and we've also seen the area be able to support more tourism businesses."

Otternomics and impacts

The Aquarium's continued research delves into the inspiring story of southern sea otters—once hunted to the brink of extinction—and uncovers the value their species not only has in restoring ecosystems but also in fueling local tourism.

The recently published study underscores the importance of measuring the economic advantages that come with species recovery, especially through ecotourism. As adorable eco-champions, sea otters show us that wildlife conservation efforts, ecosystem restoration, and climate resiliency projects can also create positive economic opportunities.

In the study, the Monterey Bay Aquarium researchers, in collaboration with Middlebury Institute for International Studies Center for the Blue Economy, found that sea otters play a vital role in attracting tourists to the slough. This generates $3.2 million in annual economic activity for Monterey and Santa Cruz counties. Visitors valued the opportunity to observe these amazing animals and their intriguing behaviors. This resulted in more visitors, jobs, and more tourism dollars flowing into the region.

Protect and support

Despite continued efforts to rebuild their population, California’s sea otters are still considered a federally threatened species and their range is limited. Their survival is vital to the health of coastal ecosystems, including coastal kelp forests and estuaries like Elkhorn Slough. If you have the chance to visit the area, keep your eyes peeled for these charismatic creatures as you paddle or hike. But please also remember to maintain a respectful distance of at least 50 feet from them. By doing so, you’ll help safeguard their well-being and have the privilege of witnessing their fascinating natural behaviors—a unique and unforgettable experience.

Embracing the opportunity to connect with nature while basking in the breathtaking scenery of Elkhorn Slough allows us to develop a profound reverence for the essential roles that all creatures play in this flourishing ecosystem. Be it as travelers, scientists or researchers, our collective efforts not only safeguard the future of sea otters and their coastal environments but also bolster the local economy through eco-tourism, demonstrating the invaluable economic contributions of these charming marine mammals.
