The flatfish façade
Like a chameleon, many species of flatfish can camouflage by changing the colors and patterns on their body to match their environment. But the physical changes don’t stop—or rather, start—there! Flatfish begin their lives with eyes on either side of their body. As they mature, one eye migrates to join the other on the “top” side. This provides the fish with the perfect view from their sideways orientation as they slide along the seafloor.
