Sea otter field observer volunteer

Help us track and observe wild, tagged sea otters for conservation research.

Duties and requirements

  • Must be age 18 or older.
  • Must provide proof of current tetanus shot.
  • Must be comfortable working in cold/wet environments, outdoors, and independently.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for up to five hours at a time. Other activities may include bending, lifting, climbing, and looking through a telescope or binoculars.
  • Must be able to carry bulky equipment over rocky coastal terrain. Equipment can weigh approximately 30 pounds and might include a radio receiver and antenna, telescopes, and a daypack.
  • Must have a valid California driver’s license, excellent driving record, and a reliable, working personal vehicle to transport equipment from location to location.
  • Must have legible handwriting and be able to read small print.
  • Must be punctual, have keen observational skills, and a strong attention to detail.
  • Must have some knowledge of sea otter behavior; ability to identify prey items and knowledge of local coastal areas is helpful. Training will be provided.
  • Locate sea otters at various sites along the California coast using radio telemetry and telescopes.
  • Record locations and all aspects of sea otter behavior, including foraging, pup development, reproductive events, and habitat usage.
  • Interact with and respond to questions from the general public, and explain and interpret your work.
  • Communicate clearly with all staff and volunteers working on the Sea Otter Program team.

Time commitment

  • Commit to at least one year of service following successful completion of training.
  • Weekly shift of five hours is required.
