Orange you glad it’s a fish?
While the silvery schools of sardines and anchovies are impressive, no fish stands out amongst the crowd quite like the garibaldi. Known for its strikingly orange coloration, this eye-catching kelp forest resident is also California’s state marine fish—what an icon! While it can be found in the wild as far south as Baja California, the garibaldi is among a variety of fishes that live in Monterey Bay.
Our bay is a national marine sanctuary, and an excellent protected space for them to call home. When we work together to safeguard critical marine habitats, we ensure the future for the ocean’s amazing wildlife, like the garibaldi.
