Makana the Laysan albatross wallpaper
A sight for soar eyes
The enviable eye makeup on our Aquarium icon Makana, our resident Laysan albatross, serves a practical purpose beyond style. The dark coloration works to absorb light and reduce glare (like the eye black used by some athletes) when these birds glide over sparkling waters. Makana experienced an injury in her youth that stopped her from being able to fly, so she came to live with us, but we feel that she glides right into the hearts of those who meet her.
Makana is an ambassador for her species, bringing awareness to the impact of plastic pollution on seabirds who mistakenly ingest this harmful waste. We can ensure that birds like Makana have a safe and healthy future by reducing our plastic consumption and supporting measures that stop plastic pollution at the source, like a strong Global Plastic Treaty. Healthy ocean ecosystems, mean healthy seabirds, and more amazing animals soaring into a safe future.
