Birthday parties often involve a cake, candles, and singing. But what if the birthday girl is a sea otter? And what if that sea otter is hundreds of miles away?
Update: On June 5, 2024, Rosa sadly passed away at the age of 24 peacefully, surrounded by her caretakers. Rosa was the oldest resident otter at the Aquarium and one of our most experienced surrogate moms, having raised 15 stranded sea otter pups in her time with us.
Video game streamer Douglas Wreden—known online as DougDoug—has been an innovator in the realm of virtual sea otter birthday parties since 2019.
It was that year that he started watching our Sea Otter Cam with viewers of his popular Twitch channel. One of our sea otters that often appears on this cam is Rosa, the oldest of five exhibit sea otters.
"When we heard that Rosa's 20th birthday was coming up in a few days, we decided to throw an impromptu birthday fundraiser on my livestream,” Douglas recalls. The first party was a hit and he has since continued the tradition of celebrating her birthday. “It's become more fun and successful every year,” he says.
Douglas Wreden (also known as video game streamer DougDoug) visited Rosa at the Aquarium in 2022.
That's certainly an understatement. To celebrate Rosa's 22nd birthday in 2021, DougDoug hosted an eight-hour birthday livestream and fundraiser. The party featured “aquatic gaming challenges” in the unique style his followers love and he shared a collection of fan-created artwork, poetry, and music—all dedicated to Rosa. His community also raised over $14,000 in honor of Rosa to donate to the Aquarium.
The celebration and support have only grown since then. In 2022, the birthday livestream garnered over $100,000 in donations! In total, since their inaugural celebration in 2019, DougDoug and his community contributed over $120,000 in honor of the matriarch of our Sea Otters exhibit! That's a lot of clams!
We’re so grateful that our social media followers can and do choose to share their love of the Aquarium by lending a kelp-ing hand. Our fans regularly hold fundraisers as a way to celebrate special occasions. If you're interested in hosting your own fundraiser, check us out on Tiltify.
